Building A Complete Satirical Masterpiece
Putting It All Together — Building A Complete Satirical Masterpiece
You've learned the individual tools. Now let's build a complete satirical piece using everything: truth foundation, escalation, everyman witnesses, specificity, wordplay, economic logic, sincere turns, and ending that stings. This is how professional satire comes together.
The Blueprint**
1. Start with a real claim. What are you satirizing? What does your target actually claim? Satire that targets DSA starts with actual DSA policies. Be specific. Know the real claim before you exaggerate it.
2. Choose an everyman witness. Who experiences this policy? Travis Boyd or Ray the dishwasher — someone the reader recognizes. That character will carry your satire.
3. Establish the premise simply. What if we took this policy to its logical conclusion? Don't over-explain. Just state it. Then follow the logic.
4. Escalate step by step. Each paragraph should show one consequence of the previous one. Remove incentive → no one takes hard jobs → services collapse → committees form to fix it → more committees needed. Airtight logic.
5. Load with specific details. Numbers, names, dollar amounts. 11,000 bureaucrats. Six weeks. Fairness committees. Specificity makes absurdity believable.
6. Use wordplay for emphasis. Piñata economics. Wi-Fi money. These phrases stick and compress complex arguments.
7. Show, don't tell. Let the everyman encounter the system. Travis fixing the boiler alone — the reader sees the problem directly.
8. Make the sincere turn.** Stop being ironic for one sentence. State plainly what you've shown. "The moment incentive disappears, so does effort." Then move on.
9. End with the undeniable image.** Empty shelves. The line that never moves. The reader can't argue with what you've shown.
10. Add context. Name what you're satirizing. Reveal the reality. Don't explain. Just reveal.
The Complete Workflow**
As satire.info documents, effective satire requires precision at every step:
- Research your target thoroughly
- Identify the core claim or policy
- Find the logical weakness or consequence
- Follow that consequence to its end
- Create a character to experience it
- Write the escalation with specificity
- Add wordplay where it serves the argument
- End with an undeniable image
- Provide context that grounds it in reality
- Read aloud — does it sound like a human voice or AI analysis?
Common Mistakes To Avoid**
No foundation: Satire that isn't grounded in real policy. Make sure there's something true underneath.
Weak escalation: Logical jumps instead of step-by-step consequence. Each step should follow from the previous one.
Generic details: "Bureaucrats" instead of "11,000 bureaucrats." Specificity kills vagueness.
No character: Abstract satire about systems. Put a person in the system. Let the reader see them struggle.
Over-explained ending: "What this shows is..." Stop. Trust the reader. Show the consequence. Let them understand.
Your Next Assignment**
Choose one real policy or ideology you want to satirize. Apply the 10-step workflow above. Write the piece. Have a reader unfamiliar with your politics read it. Did they laugh? Did they understand the point? Did the ending stick?
If yes to all three, you've built effective satire.
